Popular Misconceptions in Medical School Admissions
Premedical myths: The myths surrounding the medical school application
and admissions process run deep. For students who are just beginning
to think about applying to medical school and students who are already
entrenched in the process, it is easy to be influenced by some common
misconceptions. Without the ability to distinguish between myth and
fact, many students underestimate their potential to be strong applicants
to medical school. Dr. Lewis will help you differentiate between fact
and fiction. Lots of Q&A.
How to be a Successful in life … as a Pre-Health Student *
What does “success” really mean? How does one achieve it?
How much do our attitudes affect our happiness and how often we meet
our goals? Let Dr. Lewis help you develop your own philosophy and pathway
to success.
How Competitive are you? Assessing Your Candidacy*
This is a self-assessment inventory workshop for pre-health students,
consisting of three parts, 1. The Ideal Candidate, 2. Realistically
Assessing Your Application Profile and 3. Your Game Plan. Each attendee
has the opportunity to complete a personal profile and consider personal
strengths and weaknesses. A good starting point for developing a personal
strategy for premedical success.
The Application Process *
Afraid of that application year? Since 3 to 10 times the number
of students apply each year compared to the number accepted, this can
be a daunting task. Let Dr. Lewis demystify it for you and help you
develop an effective strategy.
How to Write the Application Personal Statement
This is a very interactive workshop where you get to practice
writing parts of your own personal statement for health professions
school. Goals are to understand the process, the content and actually
develop parts of your first draft!
Preparing for the Interview
The Interview is the single one most feared part of the application
process because it is “real time”---no “faking”
here! Skills that allow you to become more relaxed with the process
and with your own abilities are discussed and practiced during this
workshop.
Non-Traditional Applicants
What are the differences between the "non-traditional"
and the "traditional" applicant? Strengths? Weaknesses? Starting
about the mid-1980s, more people from diverse backgrounds, generally
older people with rich life experiences, started considering entering
medicine in greater numbers. For many reasons, it may take some people
many years to be ready to become a physician. Non-traditional students
can be placed in the categories: "post-baccalaureate, re-entry
and older".
